The Wahkeena Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR or DAR) was organized April 18, 1932. It is the third chapter in the Portland, Oregon, area and was formed to meet the needs of working women in Portland. Wahkeena is a Yakama Indian word meaning “most beautiful.”
Wahkeena Falls is found in the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area, along the old Columbia River highway. The Columbia Gorge has the largest number of waterfalls in North America from the Multnomah Falls that drops 620 feet to the tiny Punch Bowl Falls at 15 feet. Wahkeena Falls cascades down 242 feet and is considered a tiered waterfall with three distinct tiers. The falls flow into Wahkeena Creek and then eventually into the Columbia River. Wahkeena Falls was originally called Gordon Falls after an early pioneer. The name was changed in 1915 when the old Columbia River Highway was completed. Wahkeena Chapter, NSDAR, meets monthly, September through May on the 3rd Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon in Portland, Oregon. We would be delighted to invite you to our meetings, please use our contact form below for a list of meeting dates.
